Web Hosting Basics

Of course, this is the most basic question of all – “What is web hosting?”

Web Hosting is a service whereby an organization offers the user of a web server, in order to make a website accessible by users of the World Wide Web. An good analogy is like renting a location on the Internet. You decide how that location will be used, but if you want to have a website, it needs to be on a web server – and a web hosting company offers the rental of space on those servers – or a whole server, or even a “cluster” or set of servers for truly large websites.

A Web Server is a computer that is connected to the Internet, and that has been configured with software to accept and respond to requests from the web browsers of a user accessing a website hosted on that server.

A Web Browser is a piece of software that allows a user to access or view a web page. The page could be located on that same computer, but is more often a page located on a remote server that the user connects to through the Internet by using the website’s domain name.
